Nomads to trim squad
TNM Super League championsBe Forward Wanderers are planning to trim their squad to 27 from the current 32 in a quest to reduce their wage bill.
While confirming the move, the Nomads general secretary (GS) Mike Butao could not be drawn to disclose the prospective casualties, but according to The Nation findings, those that face the chop include injury-plagued forward Ishmael Thindwa, Precious Milanzi, Foster Namwela, Dan Kumwenda and Khumbo Ng’ambi.
Said Butao in an interview: “We currently have 32 players and we are looking at keeping around 27 players, the technical panel is working on the names.
“The thing is we get adequate funding from our sponsors and we are probably the only team which spends in the region of K13 million a month from sponsors.
“But if all this goes towards wages then we are getting it wrong and we end up tarnishing the sponsors’ name when we cannot meet the costs.
“So, there is serious need to downsize,” he said.
Butao said it is for that reason that the Nomads will not recruit during the current transfer window.
“There are some players that have hardly featured in the first round, but will be available in the second round such as Harry Nyirenda, Jaffalie Chande, Wlliam Thole, Fransisco Madinga and Simeon Singa. So, these will be almost like new signings,” he said.
On their part, Silver Strikers and Nyasa Big Bullets said although they are planning to beef up their squads by roping in one or two players, they will not off-load any.
Said Bullets chief executive officer Fleetwood Haiya: “If we sign two or three more players, our maximum will still be 25 players because if you recall, we only signed 22 players.”
